First published in 1694 in an octavo edition with only ten plates, this 1724 edition, although intended as a second edition, represents an entirely new work. Edited by Richard Mead, it was expanded with the inclusion of more than 60 finely engraved plates by Dutch engraver Michiel van der Guchts, some after drawings by Rubens and Raphael, as well as a lengthy introduction.
